"Ensuring security for your transactions"
Historically, retail networks were based on closed and proprietary systems. Today, retail networks comprise of a complex set of interconnected points, connecting remote locations back to central sites with multiple layers of redundancy. Retail payment networks can be provided by one retailer or an association of retailers, Banks and Acquirers or Service Providers. Regardless of who owns or operates the network, the end requirement is the same: to transport consumer purchase information across the network quickly and securely and provide authorization to the merchant for the purchase.

Over the last 10 years, these networks that used to be contained geographically have now spread across the globe. Regardless of what country you make your purchase from, your issuing bank can now be contacted accept the purchase. This requirement has greatly expanded the retail network infrastructure, but has also increased the costs associated with processing electronic payments.

There are several challenges in the retail payment networks today. Retail competition is as fierce as ever. With merchants promoting products and services in new innovative ways, retail networks are forced to offer new methods of transport to add new functionality and keep costs low for the merchant. Features such as "tap and go" or "Pay by Touch" are used to allow consumers to conveniently and quickly make their payments. As a result these new tools and services add additional costs to the retailer who have in turn passed these costs to the consumer or bear the cost themselves.

Merchants are beginning to limit consumers on what type of payments can be made electronically vs. cash. Smaller merchants will require a minimum purchase to offset some of the costs of electronic payment, while larger retailers will incent consumers heavily by offering deep discounts when consumers use their branded electronic payment card.

As the costs for retail networks continue to rise, providers of these networks are under pressure to reduce operational costs, speed services to the merchant and protect against theft and fraud. This is a challenging task and requires an immediate and cost-effective solution. Providers are turning to vendors who can provide these services and allow the savings to be passed on to the end user.
